Siena Educational Workshop Series


Each year, The Siena School and its staff partner with some of the area's leading professionals and educators to host a workshop and lecture series that is open to the public.  This workshop series provides a wide range of programs that allow participants to learn about and discuss current best practices and research-based strategies for teaching, learning and parenting.

THE SIENA SCHOOL EDUCATIONAL WORKSHOP SERIES:
Teaching and Parenting the LD Child 2009-2010 Program


I.   Saturday October 3, 2009, 8:30 am – 12:30 pm

Study Skills and organization: How to help  Students at Home and in School

  This half day overview will cover strategies for parents, tutors and educators to implement to help students organize their work and their study time more effectively. Participants will learn key ideas and practical tips for long-term planning (Executive Functioning) as well as daily organizational techniques. Siena staff will discuss the Siena Planner, a daily homework organizer, and various study skill techniques including note-taking, homework completion and review for tests.

II.   Saturday November 21, 2009, 8:30 am – 3:30 pm

The Building Blocks of Reading: An Overview of Multisensory Structured Language Instruction

             This full day overview will introduce the components of multisensory language instruction, a hands-on approach for teaching the foundations of reading.  It will be valuable for teachers, parents, tutors and other professionals interested in the Orton-Gillingham approach and its applications and adaptations.

 Topics will include:

  • Research and rationale for structure language instruction
  • Phonemic & phonological awareness
  • Language structure
  • Hands-on activities for teaching and reinforcing language concepts
  • The 6 kinds of syllables & syllable division
  • The impact of morphology
  • Introduction to the O-G lesson & its components
  • Examples of how The Siena School applies multisensory instruction in the classroom

III. Thursday January 21, 2010, 7:00-8:30 pm       

Deducting Tuition as a Medical Expense: A Tax Seminar

               Matt Miller, CPA, MBA, will present information about deducting tuition as a medical expense for students with diagnosed learning disabilities who attend a school that is specifically designed to meet their learning needs.

 Mr. Miller has been practicing public accounting since 1983. He holds a Bachelors of Science degree in the field of Accounting from Radford University, a Masters in Business Administration from George Mason University and certification in International Business Studies from Oxford University. Matt is the firm’s chief strategist. He is responsible for developing client tax and business strategies, designing client entity structures and managing client engagements.

IV. Saturday February 6, 2010, 8:30 am – 3:30 pm 

Multisensory Mathematics With Manipulatives

          The ASDEC Multisensory Math program is nationally recognized as offering concept-based, hands-on strategies for teaching mathematics to all students at all levels.  Topics covered include numeracy, fractions and modeling math with manipulatives using the four operations, with references to applications in Algebra. Practical applications will include manipulatives, games, chants and activities to teach and reinforce mathematical concepts in school and at home. The multisensory math overview is appropriate for parents, teachers and all educators.

V. Saturday April 17, 2010, 8:30 am - 3:30 pm ***RESCHEDULED FROM MARCH****

Written Language and the LD Student:  Approaches and Practical Strategies            

           This valuable workshop will include an overview of the teaching and reinforcement of writing skills, as well as break-out sessions on writing instruction for elementary/middle school students and middle/high school/college students (participants may choose which break-out session they would like to attend).  Hands-on strategies as well as classroom approaches will be addressed.

VI. Thursday April 8, 2010, 7:00-8:30 pm 

Martha Denckla, Kennedy Krieger Institute: Teaching Boys and Girls with ADHD

          Dr. Martha Denckla is a research scientist at the Kennedy Krieger Institute. She isalso Professor of Neurology, Pediatrics and Psychiatry at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. An engaging and knowledgeable speaker, Dr. Denckla will be discussing the ways students with ADHD learn differently and how we can address these differences. Girls characteristically show ADHD later than boys, and there is evidence that girls with ADHD differ from boys most strikingly in academic,social-emotional and neurobiological features. Dr. Denckla's research focuses on the neurobiology of girls with ADHD through anatomic magnetic resonance imaging (aMRI) and assessments of executive behaviors. This valuable presentation will be useful for parents, teachers, tutors and other professionals.
