Exploring Career Interests
"The most important thing I learned about myself in the program is how hard I can work and how much I can push myself." —Siena Student
Each year, Siena high school students undertake a two-week volunteer internship. With guidance from Siena teachers, students choose a new internship annually to explore career interests through direct experience. Students have chosen a broad range of internships, including art studios, theaters, veterinary clinics, architectural and law firms, schools, technology and web design vendors, soup kitchens, and other venues that appropriately support a student's interests and development. Each student completes a project related to their internship.
Addressing the National Career Development Guidelines, these two-week internships provide students with a work-based learning experience, requiring them to apply their personal skills and interests to a professional environment. There are three stages to the internship program: preparation, participation, and reflection. In addition to identifying internship opportunities based on personal skills and interests, students learn about professional expectations. These include the practical implications of time management, the importance of attire, and more.
I developed a lot of confidence in myself since I could actually do the tasks I was assigned by trying really hard and putting my mind to them. —Siena Graduate
